Writing/Recording A Single The 4-Minute Rule Is True

AAR Song Length.jpg

Bands often walk into my studio looking to write a “radio-ready single.” I am constantly asked “is it true that the song has to be under 4 minutes, to make it on to radio?” The answer is, YES. Producer Howard Benson, who has produced Daughty, Kelly Clarkson, My Chemical Romance, P.O.D. and many more, is very famous for chopping every song down to under 4 minutes (see All American Rejects track list above). What about Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” or like every Mars Volta song? They get radio edits, stations request them since they already want to play the band. You on the other hand, want the radio station to be interested in you, they are not going to be interested in you if they have to put effort into making your song “work for radio.” If you are a young band looking to get noticed/on the radio radar for the first time, you need to be in the format they like things in. This is in a song form under 4 minutes.
