What Is MicroSampling?

What is MicroSampling you ask? It is the technique of sampling small pieces of another song and rearranging them into a form where they cannot be recognized from their previous context. These usually include 1-3 notes that are sampled from another song, but can include more. The main qualification of what makes a microsample as compared to a standard sample is the slice doesn’t take enough of the old musical phrase that it is recognizable. In Scions never ending effort to be hip they made the above commercial was titled microsampling since the song that plays in it is a great example of the sound of a song composed solely of microsamples (and I have to say a pretty kick ass compisition). Artists like Justice, Jackson & His Computer Band, Aphex Twin and Mr. Oizo have made this technique very popular in recent years by talking about it in interviews.
