One great trick I have found is to use Bandcamp’s Download Codes to send out promos to writers. They can download the release in any format they would like, and most of all I can see if they actually downloaded the record or not and know whether I can annoy them to do so again. By simply going to the tools section of the site you can click on the number under “redeemed” and see which codes were redeemed in a .csv file. This makes it easy to reference against a list of who got which codes and figure out which promos are making it to the ears of writers. Another great trick from a great service!
Getting press for your release is a big task. One of the biggest pains of this task is knowing whether to annoy someone as to whether they have listened to your record. Most publicity houses get pretty shameless with this activity, but when you are doing your own publicity, it can reflect badly on your music if you are shaking down perspective writers every other day.
