The Mos Def T-Shirt Idea Hits A Snag

mos-def.jpgWhen not talking about how man never landed on the moon or 9/11 conspiracy theories, Mos Def has been working hard on changing the music industry. In case you missed it, Mos Def’s will be trying a new music model where he will be selling you a T-Shirt and you will get a free download of his new album The Ecstatic. We were ecstatic about this idea when we heard about it as well, since just last week we were talking about merch as viral advertisement. However, a snag was hit, some outlets reported that Nielsen Soundscan would be counting this method as an album sale. It appears Nielsen knew nothing about this and this most definitely was not a confirmed fact, but is willing to negotiate. We will see how this plays out in the coming week, but if Nielsen is to put their heads up their ass and not count it as a sale this will severely hurt the creativity coming out of many larger acts with sales obsessed labels who still think sales numbers are everything. Which could leave room for smaller artists who actually get it to take another step forward. Make your move Nielsen.
