Songwriting Tips: Turn Off The Internet

word_processing.gifOne of the biggest enemies of the songwriter is distractions and unfortunately, the pace of the modern world offers far too many.  Like many modern lyricists, I write using a computer because of the speed I can type, correct errors and move things around.  However, writing on computer can be a huge problem.  With so many other things to do, instead of finishing the last line in that chorus you’ve been working on, you find yourself surfing the high seas of the internetz for Susan Boyle forums or more Kay Perry noodz!  One simple answer I’ve found is to close my email (which is usually set to automatic download) and turn off the internet (as easy as disabling the AirPort on top right corner of your MAC).  It’s amazing how quiet the world gets when there is no internet.  Time slows down and your brain can think again.  It sounds easy but you’ll be surprised how tempted you’ll be to switch it back on, but like any drug, the cravings eventually subside!

The internet can be an aid rather than a detriment if you leverage it! I found I was getting bad at practicing my back catalog, so I made a database of my songs online. Now I spend more time surfing, reviewing, and revising my own stuff than I do being distracted by other web sites.

Yes! It certainly can help. Sometimes I do internet research on a particular subject as I am writing, which can be very useful. It’s all about having the self-control to turn it off when it’s time!
