Don’t Pass Go Before It Is Right With One Standard Mic

It even happens to the pros. You go to get a sound with your normal multi-micing situation and it just doesn’t sound right. One of the best practices when getting tone is to not always use two or mics when evaluating your starting tone. For example, for years I have used a AKG 414 and a SM-57 to get my desired guitar amp tone. If there is anything I have found really helps in my quest for better tone and improved my tracking it is getting the tone as good as I can on just the 57 first and after I have it as perfect as I can dial it, I then bring in the 414 to the picture. If I can’t get the 414 to add to the tone it gets taken out of the chain. This method insures a quick and easy way to make sure you don’t get confused by phasing variables and that you achieve optimal tone with the least confusion possible.
