Does Your Song Take Too Long To Get To The Hook?

One of the most important considerations when writing and recording a song is if it takes too long to get to the hook in your song, you may lose the listener. When you are an unknown band you could write a great chorus with the hook of a lifetime, but if you have a long intro and verse the listener may get so bored they never even get to your chorus. Over the years I have tried to pay attention to how long I listen to bands that are recommended to me, and if I am lukewarm on a band I may never even get to their chorus if it takes a minute plus to get there, and I know a lot of people who feel the same. Whether you need to cut parts down in time or re-order the arrangement, this can be a fatal flaw even when you write the best chorus of your life.
