Use Crash Cymbals Sparingly

bloodcymbal.jpgCrash cymbals in a song are a lot like cursing. If you curse all the time, no one cares, it shows no emotion you are always just being crass and abrasive. Where as if you never curse, people take notice the second you drop that F-bomb. Crash cymbals in a song work the exact same way. If you hit a crash on the one of every bar, when you actually want to use one to kick in another part it becomes ineffective. If you throw a crash cymbal in tons of parts that don’t need an accent it is no longer an accent. Another metaphor is a crash cymbal as an exclamation point. If you think of the down beats of your song being a period, a crash cymbal is an exclamation point. Imagine how stupid this blog would look if we ended every sentence with a exclamation point. That is how your song sounds when you hit the crash all the time.

    Hey,
Nice little post. A lot of drummers are hitting crash and ride cymbals all over the place. It just becomes noise after a while and the imnpact is lost.
