CD Baby has been on the Internet since dinosaurs ran it by running in mouse wheels. They were one of the first businesses to begin to put the power of distribution into every artists hands, brining on the new music model we will see in the coming years. It seems in July we will be seeing big changes (hopefully a logo update so we never have to look at that thing again) from them as they unveil a site redesign. In a post on their message board some clues became to emerge.
“One of the main improvements we’re absolutely thrilled about is the
addition of single song downloads on cdbaby.com. Just like with full
album pricing, you’ll be able to charge whatever you want for
individual song downloads (and each track can be priced differently!)Oh, and if you’d like to offer some tracks for free as a promotional tool, go for it!”
This will be revolutionary since until now it was very difficult for a band to choose their own download price. Powered by a business that has been a presence in the industry forever, this has the power to be another huge change for artists looking to do without a label.
