Behind The Video: Those Mockingbirds “Honest, Honest”

Those Mockingbirds “Honest? Honest.” – SFW Edition from SideCho Records on Vimeo.

Those Mockingbirds are a NJ based indie-power-pop band on SideCho records who got a little crazy with the concept for their NSFW video to promote their latest EP, No Symmetry, Being a band with no budget they knew they would have to capture the eyes of viewers to get people to check out their video and what catches the eye better that naked people? Well maybe naked people without black bars over their junk. Maybe if they get enough views of this video they can be convinced to release the NC-17 version of the video? In the mean time watch their awesome video and head to the jump to read how they made it.

How did the idea for the video come about?

We
had about two weeks to plan and film it, a few days before shooting was
scheduled we had a last minute meeting with the director, Jordan
Weinrich, where we sketched out this big pretentious statement involving
people being tarred and feathered (mockingbirds, feathers, get it?
guh…). Anyway, on my drive home from the meeting, I just realized that
filming a video with naked people would be hysterical. I called Jordan,
asked if he was capable of editing that many censor bars in the time we
had to deliver a video to our label, and when he said yes, it was on.

What was the budget for the video?

We spent about $300 on the video in total.

What was the budget spent on specifically?

The budget was spent on refreshments for the cast, and dinner for the
crew, and some cast members afterwords. There were about 25 extra people
not on camera who were included in this.

Did you have any outside help with the video or professional roles (such as cameraman, director, makeup)?

We worked with Focus Scope Films, based in Wayne, NJ. They handled everything and were super professional.

Did you have to do anything crazy to execute the video?

Yes, we had to convince about 25 of our friends and fans to hang out naked in a room with us all day while we filmed it.

How did you coax your friends in to getting naked?

We
told everyone in advance that we might need people in their underwear,
and a couple people to get naked for a few certain scenes. However, a
few people brought beer, and everyone stopped giving a fuck about 30 min
into shooting the undressed scenes, and from then on, no one wore
clothes for the rest of the day!

From start to finish idea, to editing how long did the video take to complete?

2 weeks or so… Jordan did not sleep the entire time. It was interesting to witness him in such a state.

Have you seen anything happen for your group as a direct result of the video?

It’s
hard to say what directly came from the video, because we released it
at the same time as all of our other promotional materials for the EP,
but we are still seeing the views climb on a daily basis, so its
definitely putting us in front of new eyes and ears every day.
