Do Release Dates Hurt Your Record More Than Help It?

This month’s Alternative Press featured the quote on the right and it got me into a discussion with some friends. Are release dates really helping our records do well or would doing away with them help our artists do better?

When records leak we are unprepared often times and behind the curve in giving our fans a way to buy the record and losing potential sales with every illegal download link. What keeps coming up is instead of building up all of this hype for when you will actually allow your fans to buy your music and support you. Should you instead be releasing your music as soon as you possibly can in order to make sure it is available to buy right when fans start hearing it? It will be interesting to see artists start to experiment with this model, since with every month that goes by it seems leaks are more and more accepted.
