No band is an island (that is, unless you're in the band Islands, or Future Islands). But the point is that you and your band can't existed in a vacuum. As appealing as it may sound, you need to get out and see other bands in your town and especially in your scene. Not only will you see what your competition is up to and how good they really are, you might actually learn something from their music and stage show. Further, if you wanna meet new people and network to get better shows or connections, you're going to have to reach out to others and extend your support. Sure it may be an overpriced show you have to trek out to in the middle of nowhere on a cold Tuesday evening, but you may end up meeting someone who can really help you in the future. Especially here in NYC, there is always a scene of some kind, and if you're lucky enough to even be in the vicinity of the next "it" band, you have a good chance of getting some more exposure yourself.
