Obituary Of A Theory: You Need To Record Drums First
As a record producer one of the things that puts many musicians at a creative disadvantage is that they think they need to record drums for all of their songs as the first step. If you are using a click track this is not the case at all. While recording drums first can lay down a great groove and energy for a track it is not needed if you have the know-how and the ear to do it right. Over the years, I and many others have recorded drums at various stages in the process for many different reasons. On metal records a guitarist may want to craft their strumming patterns and then match the drums to them. On a recent record an artist had recorded a flawless song but the drum track was recorded so poorly it ruined the song. We stopped the mix and re-recorded a drum track that fit right in with the song, giving the song a perfect feel. Do not let your creativity be limited by the restrictions of the past. Record the drums whenever it works for your creativity, just make sure it helps your song.
