"We only had $1,000 and wanted to make a full length!"
"Our friend gave us a great rate on recording but he didn't really know what he was doing."
"We recorded in this studio that looked so amazing! It was so nice the console was the size of a jet airplane"
How many times have you heard these things? These sayings plague my daily life but the one problem is 9 times out of 10 before I hear these "excuses", I heard the song and don't care what the excuse is, I don't want to hear the song again. Most of the time when people first hear your music you are never going to get to tell your story and make excuses for your music. If your music has a great story or an excuse, well thats good but I guarantee you you're still going to be sitting in your parents basement for the next year of your life till you make a recording that you don't need to say anything to someone before they hear what you are doing.
The fact of the matter is everyday people are making music that needs no explanation to make them want to hear it again. Those songs are what we all will listen to and what will take up time in our iPods. We will not be listening to your song where I have to sit and forgive that you would rather spend money on a cool shirt at Hot Topic than another day in the studio to polish your performance. Next time you are entering the studio make sure you aren't going to have to make a qualification or an excuse on why your music is cool or could have been better. Just make it right or else keep sniffing the litter box in your parents basement.
