TechCrunch, put up an article yesterday that just scared the crap out of everyone still living in 2006. Myspace may soon charging for streaming music. This could mean the end of music discovery as we know it and be detrimental to smaller acts. Since Myspace is still the top Google result for many acts, this could make it harder for people to discover new artists. So what do you do to get around it?

  1. Put another page where people can hear your music in your name. For example, if you have a web page with a streaming player put that right in your name.
  2. Get links for your other sites all over your site.
  3. Assuming Myspace doesn't ban them, Reverb Nation, Fairtilizer and Nimbit all have players that you can embed in your Myspace page that will stream your music and offer ways to buy it!

I may be wrong, but it sounds like from that article that Myspace will charge listeners for streaming *commercial* music -- ie, songs they need to license. Doesn't that imply that one could still licence music to myspace to not require payment?

I agree that this article does list it as commercial music. Other articles have speculated it will be an all around subscription service to stream any of Myspaces content. It is scary days these days when the childish luddite mind of Ruper Murdoch comes up with schemes like this and his "I will block Google from all Newscorp content" brain fart ideas. If you aren't fearful that Myspace is going to keep going down the toilet into stupid ideas like this you are not keeping up with the retarded business moves this moron makes, whether it is calling Obama a racist, the Google blocking or thinking people will pay to hear the crappy low bit rate stream of a Myspace player.

I am all for this ****tard running himself out of business, but I want to make sure all smart artists get in a life raft beforehand.
