"It started with writing the backstory and wondering if I could write [without] every song starting with "I"--at least 200 "I"s per song. I thought "It's either going to be really great, or it's gonna be career-endingly shitty. If it's that way, I don't have to put it out."
It is really easy to write about yourself all the time but it can get quite boring. Especially if you aren't going through anything interesting emotionally. Working in some songs about situations, stories, literature or other people can be a great exercise in getting you better at songwriting. As well it gives the listeners a chance to hear something different from you. Hearing a self centered view (constantly singing "I" like Trent), accusing people of something (singing "You" like every late 90's Nu-Metal song) or We (not every song needs to be a love song!) can get old fast. Learn some diversity.
