Bands will often walk into my studio and we will start to record a song and all of a sudden we hit a bump in the road. Either a band member or I absolutely hate a lyric in the song and we can't go on till it is changed. Sometimes the lyric is dumb, it is too wordy or the songwriter stole it from another song and didn't realize it (it happens to the best of us). No matter what, it has to go and sometimes this can take minutes, hours and in worst case scenario (that I have lived through) days to find new lyrics that work really well for the song. This is when it would be really great to have some extra lyrics written for the song!
Having an extra verse or two laying around helps you write a better song in so many ways:
- After you get done with the writing you can substitute out some of the best lines and move them around in the song.
- If the song needs another counter melody at some point you have some lyrics laying around to choose from.
- If you get stuck in the studio - like I described above - you will be able to handle the situation fast and easy.
- It makes you a better songwriter and improves your songs to have a lot of choices to refine your songs with.
