Whether you are a band, label or a record producer we all have a problem in this digital age. How do you send files in a secure way that you don't want leaking and have the whole world potentially downloading? Megaupload and Rapidshare can be google searched and found by anyone on the Internet. While sites like YouSendIt can be costly and confusing for the user, but can be right for some peoples needs. One way to share your files on the net whether it is a studio sending an artist mixes, labels wanting to send around files, or a band wanting to give a few people password protected acess to their new demo is to use MobileMe. In addition to file sharing MobileMe offers many other features for their $99 a year fee, like email (with ____@me.com address), syncing on the iPhone for calendars and contacts, and many ways to upload media to the net. As well they announced at WWDC yesterday that with a MobileMe membership you will be able to track your iPhone if it gets lost and erase all of the data if necessary. In this tutorial we will show you a quick and easy way to securely share files on the net with people. Whether you want to share a PDF of album art, mixes, or whatever, you can learn how to do it with this simple tutorial.
The first thing we need to do is figure out what you would like to share. In this case I am going to share some mixes of a band I am presently mixing called Royal Crime Syndicate. The first thing I want to do is locate these files on my mac (or PC). Since I will be sending numerous files I will need to compress them using Stuffit (see pic below), if you are only sending one file you can skip this step. Once your file is done compressing be sure to name it a memorable name.

Now we need to go to me.com, where we will login with our MobileMe account info. Once you are in we want to click on the Disk Icon on the top left hand side of the screen. Once that is clicked we are in your iDisk. In the top middle of the screen we need to click the file upload button.

uploadisdisk.pngThis will now ask you which file you would like to upload. Hit the choose button and locate the file we want to send. Once you do this your file will begin to upload. Once this is done you will now see your file in the file menu on MobileMe's iDisk. Click this file and it will show up in the workspace. Click the button that says Sharing Options.
sharing.pngYou can now enter the emails of anyone who you would like to receive these files. You can choose a link expiration and even password protect the file. If you know that everyone has downloaded the files and are worried about it being leaked, you can return to this same screen later and click Stop Sharing and it will no longer be accessible so the drummer can't send it to the chick with the stupid haircut and snake bite piercings that he is trying to lure into his van. Once your recipients get the email from you it looks all fancy and professional like this:

Happy file sharing!
