There is a constant struggle as a studio owner between obtaining gear that you want versus what you need. There are many essential things you need to make a record like something to record into. There are also plug-ins that makes you sound like an astronaut talking that you don't necessarily need to be able to get a record made no matter how fun they are to play with. Distinguishing between these things with your equipment budget is very important.
No one can ever afford every piece of gear they would love to have. It is very important to make wise choices about which gear you need and want. While a Eventide FX Processor can get you some great sounds and be tons of fun to play with, if you do not have a mic pre that can capture the tones you create clearly, it is all for naught. When choosing which gear to buy I find it very important to make a list. Put them in wants and needs and weight each piece as to how much it will really help your sound. While it can be fun to buy a new delay pedal, if you don't have a great vocal chain yet you are dooming your recordings. Prioritize your gear buys by where your recording weaknesses are and soon enough you will have much better recordings.
