Tom Gating is a touchy subject. Some feel it is best to maintain the natural sound of the kit, while others want maximum control over the sound without nasty bleed. Others feel you should still maintain some of the Tom bleed, just ride it down a little. I feel each one of those theories is a separate technique to be used at different times. In this video we are going to go to the extreme and delete out all the bleed from each Tom track in the session. The reason you would do this would be to get maximum control over your Tom's tone to compress and EQ them. Traditional Gates take up CPU or can be inaccurate, while drawing in automation can be a long cumbersome task, though it does offer more control. While some of the sound may be a little bit processed when soloed, once there are instruments on top it is the subtlety that is lost. For a more natural feel you can extend your fades much longer (or write in automation) if you'd like to keep a more natural sound to your tracks. In this video we explore hard gating your Tom tracks in the waveform.
